COSM and Public Health Society Host Panel Discussion on Pseudoscience and Misinformation

The Communication and Social Media Society (COSM), in collaboration with the Public Health Society at Phoenicia University, organized a panel discussion aimed at raising awareness about pseudoscience and its impact on society.

The session brought together instructors Mr. Philippe Abou Zeid and Dr. Hamdan, who explored the concept of pseudoscience from both scientific and communication perspectives. Dr. Hamdan began by defining pseudoscience and outlining its core characteristics, explaining how certain claims or practices may appear scientific while lacking evidence and adherence to the scientific method. Real-life examples were used to illustrate how pseudoscientific practices emerge and spread.

Mr. Abou Zeid addressed pseudoscience as a communication and digital challenge, highlighting how misinformation is often amplified through online platforms when unverified information is shared by influencers or content creators. He discussed how such practices contribute to misinformation campaigns and emphasized the responsibility of communicators to verify sources and content.

The discussion underscored the importance of critical thinking, scientific literacy, and responsible communication, reinforcing the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing misinformation and promoting informed public discourse.
